ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka Police have tracked down a group of young men whose reckless driving on the southern expressway last Saturday (10) was caught on camera and was widely condemned.
Footage of the passengers sticking their entire torso out the car window while driving down the highway went viral on social media, drawing much criticism.
Traffic on Sri Lanka’s expressways generally moves at 80 to 100kmph. Police statistics show that the country records around 3,000 fatalities due to traffic accidents every year.
Investigations have revealed that the original owner of the vehicle is a resident of Peradeniya who had sold the Toyota Aqua to a resident in Akurana, Alawathugoda, police said.
Five suspects including the driver of the car have been summoned to the Southern Expressway Control Centre in Gelanigama, Bandaragama. Police said the suspects have committed a number offences such as reckless and neglectful driving and causing disturbances to other motorists.
It is unclear at present if the young men were under the influence of alcohol.
