Huawei says existing Sri Lanka users could use Google apps, get updates
ECONOMYNEXT – China’s Huawei said existing smartphone users in Sri Lanka will continue to get support and would be able to download updates for Goggle applications, after the US firm said it will cut ties with the telecom equipment maker.
"Holders of current Huawei smartphones with Google apps, will continue to be able to use and download app updates provided by Google," the firm said in a statement.
"Sri Lankan customers are also assured of continuous support for present existing Huawei smartphones in the market."
Google said it was cutting ties with Huawei on national security concerns, giving rising to fears that owners of the Chinese phone brand may not be able to use popular applications such as Gmail and Google maps.
There have been growing fears stoked by the US that Huawei telecom equipment was being used to spy on other countries after Xi Jinping became President of China.
The US under Donald Trump had already banned the use of Huawei 5G equipment.
The Trump administration had also accused the firm of stealing technology.
Some other countries had also followed suit slapping various curbs on the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment. (Colombo/May20/2019)
