“I am the victim” – President on the Swiss Embassy drama
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says he is the victim in the case of the Swiss Embassy staffer who says she was abducted and molested by men who claimed to be police officers.
“I am the victim because just a day after I assumed office there appeared to be a White Van abduction,” he told reporters at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo this afternoon Dec 16.
He also questioned as to how the New York Times website had reported the story immediately as the government was informed.
The President emphasized that the whole affair has not spoiled the relationship between Switzerland and Sri Lanka.
“We agree that the Swiss Ambassador did the right thing by his staff member by informing the government that she has made this claim. He spoke to the Prime Minister who immediately ordered an investigation,” he said.
“We have no suspicions that the Swiss government acted incorrectly,” he said.
He said that he had spoken to the Swiss Ambassador Hanspeter Mock today and informed him that the investigation into the incident has shown that “no such thing happened.”
“Most definitely no government agency was involved in this drama,” he said.
He said that the staffer, whom we now know is Visa Assistant Garnier Banister Francis, “is not co-operating with the investigators. She says she feels faint,” the President said.
“This whole thing is made up,” he concluded.
Diplomatic sources told RepublicNext that “Berne ( the Swiss government) is taking the issue very seriously as is the diplomatic community in Colombo.”
