ECONOMYNEXT – The Indian Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh’s scheduled two-day official visit to Sri Lanka to review bilateral defence ties was delayed within six hours of the Indian High Commission in Colombo announcing the visit.
“Visit of Defence Minister of India to Sri Lanka scheduled for 2-3 September has been deferred. Fresh dates to be decided later,” the Indian High Commission said in a statement late on Friday, within six hours after it originally announced the visit.
The Indian High Commission did not give the reason for the deferment, but Sri Lankan officials aware of the Indian Minister’s schedule said weather warnings would have been the reason.
Possible adverse weather conditions have been forecast by Sri Lankan authorities. The Indian Defence Minister was expected to travel to the up country and eastern port district of Trincomalee in his tight schedule.
The Indian Defence Minister’s visit has been scheduled amid a Chinese request to dock its research vessel Shi Yan 6 at the ports of Sri Lanka from October 26 to November 10. India has already raised security concerns with the Sri Lankan government over the Chinese ship. Sri Lanka has yet to officially approve the Chinese request, government officials say.
