It’s the system that destroyed Cricket not Hathuru – Arjuna
World cup winning cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga says Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe should not be blamed for the failures in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) since it is the administrators who ruined the game.
Addressing a Press Conference in Colombo today (6), he said that he thinks the cricket administration “is a den of thieves.”
Ranatunga, who is now Minister for Civil Aviation said that the impression that the administration and the players are good and the Coach is bad is wrong. “It is this administration that chose Hathurusinghe,” he pointed out.
Minister Ranatunga made these comments at a media briefing held this morning(6 Aug) in the Department of Government Information.
He also said that the decision whether to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to probe corruption in cricket will be decided at the next Party Leaders’ meeting in parliament.
“If we can appoint a PSC then we can bring those people who are responsible for the corruption in cricket and question them,” he said.
Ranatunga said that he does not agree with the new cricket constitution that was tabled in parliament last month by Sports Minister Harin Fernando. “I do not agree with the new constitution as they are trying to bring an old concept which will make cricket a business,” he added.
But he said that he agrees to one side of it where former players like Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara are proposing to reduce the quantity and increase the quality of players at the top level.
He said that the voting system among the sports clubs should also be reduced
“The Sports Minister presented certain proposals to the parliament but that is not what should have been done, a proper sports policy should be prepared and it should be debated over in the parliament and then decide on the amendments to the Sports Act,” said the minister.
