Jerome de Silva awarded ‘Kala Keerthi’ title – a first for English Theatre
Veteran Director/Producer and founder of the Workshop Players theatre group Jerome L. de Silva was awarded the “Kala Keerthi” national title by President Maithripala Sirisena at the National Awards ceremony yesterday (19 Aug).
‘Kala Keerthi’ is the highest national honour for the arts, and this is the first time in the history of the award ceremony that an individual from English theatre received this recognition.
The National Awards ceremony for the year 2019 at the BMICH where national awards such as Deshamanya, Sri Lanka Ratna, Deshabandu, Vidyajothi and Kala Keerthi were awarded to citizens who have contributed to the country in their various capacities.
The veteran director was awarded the title for his extraordinary achievements and contributions towards arts, culture and drama.
The title was bestowed upon de Silva in line with his 50th anniversary in the field of theatre.
The director has over 75 productions to his credit and also has an acting credit in film – a starring role in ‘The Common Man’ with award-winning Hollywood actor Ben Kingsley.
