Journalists organisations mark Black January

Journalists and Media activists remembered fellow workers who have been killed or dissappeared at a vigil at Liptons Circus in Colombo Jan 28

ECONOMYNEXT – Several Media workers and activists organisations gathered yesterday to call for a united effort to safeguard journalists in their line of duty.

At a meeting held at the Sri Lanka Press Institute Auditorium, these organisations pledged to continue to agitate for information and justice for the journalists, who have been killed, disappeared or assaulted.

Human Rights Lawyer Ramani Muttetuwegama said that journalists have suffered violence due to their profession.

“There is a danger that the profession itself will be harmed if there is more violence against them,” she said.

The Convenor of the Free Media Movement C Dodawatte also spoke on the occasion.

The gathering included a number of Media organisations.

Later in the evening, all the participants held a candlelight vigil for the journalists who have suffered violence.
