JVP led NPP decides to temporarily halt election campaign
ECONOMYNEXT-Leader of National People’s Power (NPP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake says his alliance will temporarily halt all election campaigning activities to avoid further spread of COVID-19.
Speaking to reporters this morning the former MP said they arrived at the decision after the World Health Organisation (WHO) and health experts in Sri Lanka had said the coming two weeks are crucial for the country with regard to the spread of COVID-19.
Further, he said that Election Commission should announce its stand on the parliamentary election as there is uncertainty created among the general public on the election.
He added that since the election campaign of parties contesting election is on hold due to the spread of COVID-19, “the Election Commission should consider extending the election time period in order to create a situation where all the political parties could propagate their ideologies to the general public equally without any difficulties.”
As he said owners of media agencies could promote certain candidates by campaigning through print and electronic media while candidates in the same party and other parties will find difficult to match such campaigns.(Colombo/Mar16/2020)
