Kabir requests beefed up security in Mawanella today
Minister of Highways & Road Development Kabirh Hashim has made a formal request for increased security in Mawanaella, his electorate, anticipating communal violence in the area.
Writing to State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena, Minister Hashim yesterday requested to strengthen the security of the Mawanella town and surrounding areas in the Kegalle district. The request was made following the alleged utterances of a Buddhist priest named Ven. Medirigiriya Punya Sara Thero of the Devanagala Sri Rajamaha Viharaya calling for a mass gathering in Mawanella today (19) to “offer participants’ lives to the Buddha”.
In his letter, Hashim said that this remark is open to any number of interpretations, adding that the priest in question has been “propagating similar messages that could be construed as hate speech to the trustees (dayaka sabhas) and audiences at a number of temples in the locality.”
