Katuwapitiya tense after stone attack

Police are investigating after an unknown person threw a stone at the statue of St Sebastian at Katuwapitiya junction in the early hours of this morning.

It did not cause damage to the statue but the glass surrounding it is cracked.

The statue remains undamaged after the stone was thrown this morning

Soldiers and police were immediately deployed and the Army Spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu told RepublicNext that there were no incidents that followed.

Police also confirmed the incident and said that the situation was peaceful.

The St Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya was the worst hit location in the Easter Sunday attacks where more than 102 people were killed by an Islamic extremist suicide bomber.

Local residents staged a demonstration calling for justice for the victims of the Easter attacks

Shortly after the news of the stoning spread, an impromptu demonstration sprang up.

The demonstrators were family members of victims of the bombings and they called on the government to give them justice.
