“Leasing Mafia” blamed for alleged beating to death of Three-wheeler trade union leader Jayawardena
ECONOMYNEXT- Eight persons have been arrested by the Mirihana Police over the horrific beating to death of Sunil Jayawardena the Chairman of Self-Employed Professionals’ Three-Wheeler Association.
Jayawardena, a campaigner against unfair leasing practices had posted an emotional video appealing to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to intervene to provide concessions to Tuk-tuk owners who are finding it difficult to meet leasing payments due to the fall in business during COVID 19.
Police say he was beaten to death yesterday after a heated argument over a leasing of a three-wheeler that took place in front of leasing company at Mirihana.
A video of the assault was being shared on social media but has now been taken down.
The victim, Jayawardena was 53, and a father of 3 children.
He was also a candidate from an independent party contesting the General Election from Colombo District.
He had recently had posted videos from his Facebook account criticising the ‘Leasing Mafia.’
The former Leader of the Opposition and Samagi Jana Balavegaya chief Sajith Premadasa criticized the government for not ensuring small-timers such as Three-wheeler drivers got the promised leasing concessions.
The Mirihana are police conducting further investigations. (Colombo/June11/2020)
