Litro Gas emergency LPG supplies on the way

ECONOMYNEXT – State-run Litro Gas Plc has made an emergency purchase of 12,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas, in the wake of panic buying triggered by a supply disruption of the second player in the market.

A ship with 3,600 metric tonnes of LPG reached Colombo on Saturday November 02, and another ship with 3,600 MT will reach Colombo on Tuesday, and yet another on Saturday, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

A ship with 6,000MT of LPG, under standard procurement will also reach Colombo during the week.

There was a shortage of LPG in the market after a supply disruption at Laugfs Gas, the second supplier in the duopoly in Sri Lanka.

“The emergency purchases will clear the shortage,” the Finance Ministry said. “People should not have undue fears.”

The Consumer Protection Authority had raided 40 dealers who were selling gas at higher prices in the black market, the statement said. (Colombo/Nov02/2019)
