Mahanama and Piyadasa to be indicted -CIABOC
The Bribery Commission intends to indict two senior government officials for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 20 million from an Indian investor in 2018, the Colombo Chief Magistrate was informed today.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption informed Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne, that the investigation against the accused is completed.
The two accused, former President’s Chief of Staff Dr. Kusumadasa Mahanama and former State Timber Corporation Chairman Piyadasa Dissanayake, were arrested in the parking lot of a five-star hotel in Colombo on May 3 last year.
Officers say they were arrested as they were accepting the bribe.
They are alleged to have initially solicited a bribe of Rs 540 million to allocate shares from the Sugar Corporation to the investor.
However, this had been negotiated down and they are alleged to have agreed to accept Rs. 100 million.
Mahanama is a senior Sri Lanka Administrative Service officer who has held top positions in the Rajapaksa and Chandrika administrations as well.
