Military Police deployed in Greater Colombo to help police control traffic
ECONOMYNEXT – Military Policemen are deployed in Colombo and the suburbs to assist police to ease the heavy traffic congestion in the city from today a senior Military official said.
Military Spokesman Brigadier Chandana Wickramasinghe told EconomyNext that this initiative was taken under the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the number of vehicles on the road have increased causing heavy traffic.
“Under the directive of the President, we decided to deploy the military police in Colombo city to assist the police control the traffic, especially during the rush hours,” he said.
“The main duty of the military police is to maintain the law and order in the country but from today onwards the military police will contribute in easing the traffic jam as well,” Wickramasinghe said.
“The majority of the commuters wait in the traffic jam for hours in Colombo which has become problematic. In addition, a number of military vehicles are also on the road during peak hours. Therefore, both the police and military police will now work towards reducing traffic congestion,” Wickramasinghe added.
Military Police are currently deployed in thirty locations in Colombo during the rush hours.
