Mobitel in investment drive to boost rural broadband in Sri Lanka
ECONOMYNEXT – Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd, a unit of publicly traded Sri Lanka Telecom Plc, will expand a 100 million dollar investment drive started last year to expand broadband as data use is picking up country-wide, an official said.
“In 2019 alone, we made a 100 million US dollars’ investment for this expansion” Mobitel Chief Executive Officer, Nalin Perera told EconomyNext.
“With this project coming to an end we will have a 98 percent of the population covered by the Mobitel coverage.
“In the 2020 we will invest another 25 million US dollars.”
The company has eight million voice and data customers. Perera said Mobitel had improved its data network which was a fast growing area.
“One thing that I can give as an indication is that data is growing year on year and that has very clearly justified our investment that we have made on to network in terms of investing for the future which is data traffic,” he said.
The 100 million dollar project which is now drawing to a close had expanded internet to rural areas and also strengthened the quality and capacity in Colombo.
Investments were made from internally generated funds.
“It was to improve the rural area Broad Band facility and improve the speed, capacity and coverage in Greater Colombo and other parts of the country,” Perera said.
“Right now, we are in the process of rolling out the second stage of that expansion.” (Colombo/Feb18/2020)
