More than 40 incidents of post-election violence reported-CMEV
Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) says that 45 incidents of post-election violence were reported during the period that ended yesterday (21 Nov) midnight.
The 45 incidents reported to CMEV include 23 assaults, 10 intimidation or threats, 4 damage to property, 5 election offences, 2 illegal campaignings and one other.
The most number of incidents were reported from Kalutara district which is 9 while the second most incidents were reported from Anuradhapura and Kurunegala districts which amounted to 6 each.
Further, 35 incidents out of 45 incidents reported were against SLPP while 4 were against NDF and 6 other incidents where the party could not be determined.
Meanwhile, the Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said that police have received only 19 complaints of post-election incidents, which includes 13 assaults, 4 threats and 2 damage to property.
He also said that 13 suspects were arrested by the police relating to the incidents and that there are more suspects to be arrested in ongoing investigations.
However, he said that overall the 2019 election has had a lower level of violence compared to the 2015 elections where 45 incidents of post-election violence were reported..
