Nearly 300 curfew violators arrested
ECONOMYNEXT – Police are warning people in whose areas the curfew will be lifted on Monday to observe strict guidelines to minimize close human contact.
In a statement released on Saturday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said that people should maintain a distance of at least one metre from the next person.
He called on shops and supermarkets not to allow their premises to become overcrowded.
“We expect the public to act in a disciplined manner,” he said.
During the last curfew period, the police have arrested 291 people for violations.
They ranged from people who walked around in public spaces, some who were driving without a curfew pass and others who had gathered in vacant lots to consume alcohol.
The blanket countrywide curfew imposed on Friday is extended in the Colombo, Gampaha and Puttalam Districts until Tuesday morning.
It is lifted for the rest of the country on Monday but will be re-imposed the same afternoon. (Colombo, March 22, 2020)
