Nilwala rising warns Disaster Management Centre
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) is warning that the Nilwala Ganga is rising and major flooding is possible due to the continuous rain hence people living in close proximity are advised to take precautions.
DMC further reported that 12,509 people belonging to 3,141 families were affected due to the weather in Kandy, Moneragala, Kegalle, Rathnapura, Badulla, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Hambantota, Jaffna, Ampara, Pollonnaruwa and Matara districts.
Lastly, DMC noted that, 322 houses have been partially damaged while 8 houses have been completely destroyed in the subsequent flooding.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department stated that Showers are expected on most parts of the island day, particularly after 1.00 p.m
North-central, Eastern, Uva, Southern Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces will face fairly heavy falls about 50-75 mm.
“General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers” the Met Department said in the statement.
