NTJ propaganda material, syringes seized in Kandy
The army seized caches of National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) propaganda and other material during special cordon-and-search operations conducted in Kandy, Nawalapitiya, Gampola, Peradeniya, Akurana, Katugastota and Madawala over the past 24 hours.
These items comprised 17 t-shirts, books, NTJ documents, four NTJ banners, five NTJ recruiting applications and two boxes of blood-collecting syringes (300 in each box) – a type unavailable in local hospitals and pharmacies.
The Army said it also recovered 76 NTJ CDs, six false birth certificates, six fake NICs, 11 fake passports, 11 counterfeit vehicle number plates, one fake driving license, six suspicious bank slips, 16 mobile phones, 18 SIM cards, three memory cards, one motorbike, four video cameras and 15 cassette recorders during in said search operations.
A total of 27 suspects were taken into Army custody along with the seized items and were handed over to Kandy Police for further investigation.
The Army also searched a mosque in Moneragala yesterday afternoon following an intelligence briefing and took into custody a stock of ISIS literature and a single cab painted in camouflage colours, the Army said. Three suspects were arrested in connection with this and were handed over to the Moneragala police.
