One dead in flooding, 23 missing
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported today that 1 person residing in Matara District died and 4 people are injured due to heavy rain.
DMC further stated that a total number of 23 people are missing and 20,336 people belonging to 5,262 families were affected due to heavy showers in Kandy, Moneragala, Kegalle, Rathnapura, Badulla, Puttalam, Kurunegala, Hambantota, Jaffna, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Gampaha and Matara districts.
Additionally, DMC said that 639 houses have been partially damaged while 23 houses have been completely destroyed in the subsequent flooding.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department stated that showers are expected in most parts of the island day, particularly after 1.00 p.m
Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces as well as Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts will face fairly heavy falls about 75 mm.
“General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers” the Met Department said.
