Over 12,000 people hit by cyclone Burevi’s ferocity – DMC

ECONOMYNEXT -Cyclone Burevi has affected some twelve thousand people from over three thousand families mostly in the North and East of the island the Disaster Management Centre reported today.

The cyclone that made landfall between Thiriyay and Kilinochchi late last night has traversed the island and “is moving away from the island between Mannar and Pooneryn” according to the Meteorological Department.

The 3,554 families who were affected are from the Northern Province from the Districts of Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu the DMC said.

A total of 12,251 people have been hit by the storm that had been brewing over the past week caused by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.

Twelve families in the Eastern District of Trincomalee were also affected the DMC reported.

One person is reported missing in Chunnakam while four others in Jaffna were injured the report said.

The cyclone which packed winds of nearly 100kmph flattened 15 homes in the Northern Province and damaged nearly 200 more, DMC said. (Colombo December 3, 2020)
