Over 14,000 people affected by adverse weather
A total of 14,164 people from 4,153 families have been affected by the adverse weather conditions prevalent across the island, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.
Five persons have sustained injuries in the heavy rains, while six houses have been destroyed completely, with 259 houses being partially damaged.
The DMC has set up 29 relief centres to assist those affected.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology said that showering conditions are expected to worsen over the Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva and Central provinces from tonight onwards (03) due to an atmospheric disturbance.
Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Uva and Southern provinces and the Kurunegala district today while showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere after 1 pm, the Met Department added.
