Pakistan’s Army chief visits Sri Lanka
COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – The army chief of Pakistan, which provided weapons and training to Sri Lanka’s military in its war against Tamil Tiger separatists, arrived in the island Friday on a four-day visit.
The visit of Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif is on the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart Lieutenant General Krishantha de Silva, the Pakistan High Commission said in a statement.
During his stay in Sri Lanka, Sharif will meet Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and the top leadership of Sri Lanka’s armed forces.
“The visit of Pakistan’s Army Chief will provide both sides with an opportunity to review ongoing cooperation and collaboration, and to discuss ways to further broaden and deepen this relationship,” the statement said.
“Pakistan and Sri Lanka have comprehensive and mutually beneficial training collaboration for the Army, Navy and Air Force.”
