Petition against death penalty; hearings to continue
The five Judge Bench of the Appeal Court examining a Writ Petition against the resumption of executions in Sri Lanka will continue hearings on Wednesday.
The Judges hearing the case are Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Deepali Wijesundera, Janak de Silva, Achala Vengapulli and Arjuna Obeysekara.
On Tuesday (02) Deputy Solicitor General Nerin Pulle submitted that under the Constitution only the Supreme Court can rule on the powers of the President.
He said that the executions are being carried out by the President using the powers he has in his possession.
The Writ Petition has been filed by journalist Malinda Seneviratne.
Attorney Niran Anketell appeared for the petitioner.
There a further 11 petitions that have been filed by various parties including religious leaders against the death penalty.
