Police arrest Frontline Socialist Party members protesting against the US
ECONOMYNEXT – Police have arrested dozens of people who tried to stage a demonstration near the United States embassy in Colombo in sympathy with the Black Lives Matter movement in that country.
Police had obtained a court order blocking the planned protest under the Quarantine Ordinance in view of the COVID 19 pandemic.
Among those arrested are Human Rights lawyer Nuwan Bopage and the leader of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Duminda Nagamuwa.
Reports said these two leaders were not part of the demonstration and were some distance away from the US embassy when they were arrested.
Other reports said that another senior member of the FSP and several members were arrested while they were engaged in a peaceful protest near the Colombo Municipal Council. (Colombo, June 9, 2020)
