ECONOMYNEXT – Power supply to about 7,000 households in the Puttalam district was disrupted last night due to outages caused by strong winds that gusted across the district.

The Department of Government Information said approximately 635 houses were damaged due to strong winds in the Karuwalagaswewa, Nawagattegama, Puttalam, Wanathawilluwa and Mahakumbukkadawala divisional secretariats.

Roofs of 37 of these houses were blown off.

Measures have been taken to provide tarpaulin sheets as temporary covers for the destroyed roofs, the information department said.

Displaced residents have been moved to safer locations including homes of relatives and public spaces. It is not clear whether physical distance measures are in place for the displaced.

Damages sustained are currently being estimated and the people affected will be compensated during the course of the day, the statement said, adding that power supply is expected to be restored by this evening. (Colombo/Apr16/2020)
