ECONOMYNEXT-The government will go ahead with a plan to introduce laws to resolve employee disputes in the State Sector which will be similar to those currently used by the private sector Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana told reporters
Speaking at the Cabinet briefing held this morning, he said that since it was apparent that there are instances in which achieving national development goals become difficult due to protest campaigns, picketing and strikes carried out by some government employees at present.
Although there are provisions in the Industrial Disputes Act No. 43 of 1950 for minimizing the disputes and strikes in the private sector, the government sector possesses no such method.
So he said that it was decided to appoint to a committee comprising the Secretaries of the relevant Ministries and the representatives of the applicable trade unions in order to introduce a mechanism fortified with four forged aspects of discussion/dialogue, trial, mediation and arbitration that all parties can accept for the prevention of disputes in the state sector and arbitrate them.
