Railway trade unions warn of another strike
The railway trade unions will be forced to carry out another train strike if the jobs of the current informal workers of the department are not made permanent, the Chairman of All Ceylon Railway Union (ACRU) S.P Vithanage said.
The trade unions are calling for a meeting with Minister of Transport Arjuna Ranatunga to discuss further in this regard.
“At present, there are around 1500 informal workers who have worked in the Railways department for more than five years and still their jobs are not made permanent. Yet, the Ministry is hiring more other workers without making the old workers’ jobs permanent,” Vithanage said.
Vithanage further said that although they wrote a letter to the Minister in this regard, the unions haven’t received any response from the minister.
Therefore, Vithanage is urging the Minister to hold a discussion with them to resolve the problem, which would otherwise force them to carry out another strike.
