Ranil says he will be PM in the next government.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe asserts that he will remain Premier and he will continue the development projects carried out by the present government if the New Democratic Front (NDF) wins the upcoming presidential election.
Responding to a question raised by a journalist during a media briefing held at Temple Trees this afternoon Oct 30, the Prime Minister said “I will do the work as the Prime Minister. Sajith Premadasa will be the President.”
Addressing the journalists, the Prime Minister said that the present Government contributed to development in many ways although a large number of loans taken by the previous administration had to be paid off.
“We had a problem with a big debt. As we got in we couldn’t have foreign borrowings to pay off the foreign loans. but now we have created the ground where we can go ahead. Infrastructure for development has been laid. We are in a region that is growing fast. If we go ahead with this we can have about 7.5 per cent growth within the next five years,” the Prime Minister said.
Asked as to why the United National Party (UNP) was defeated during the local election polls even though development projects were carried out, the Prime Minister said that UNP had a ‘difficult time’ during that period.
“There were droughts and there was a shortage of fertilizer and the crops went down. Those were the matters that affected us. There was a large number of people who didn’t get the nomination from the party so they went across to different parties. Personal factors also played a big role,” Wickremesinghe added.
