Sajith: How come there is a Covid surge because government said it beat the virus
ECONOMYNEXT –Sajith Premadasa is asking how is there a big surge in Covid 19 patients today after the government during the Parliamentary General elections announced that the disease has been eradicated from the country.
Speaking in Parliament today, as the Minuwangoda cluster produced more than a thousand Covid positive patients over a 24-hour period, the Leader of the Opposition took the government to task.
“The government ministers think this a big joke,” he said as the government Members heckled him.
Premadasa also took aim at the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi, who he said was hardly in Parliament yesterday and “has only come into the House now,” which was in the afternoon.
“She should be making a special statement on this issue as the people are very worried and concerned,” Premadasa said.
He also pointed out as Dr Haritha Aluthge of the GMOA had said the source for the infection of the first garment worker who was detected with the disease in this cluster has not been found out. “In almost all of the earlier cases we traced the source,” he said.
He also questioned as to whether the country had enough hospital beds to deal with the crisis as well as sufficient ventilators and other essential equipment.
He also said the government Health services were transporting healthy people in the same ambulances as the persons who are infected with the coronavirus.
Premadasa also pointed out that the Medical Research Institute has said that this may be a different strain of the virus as the virus load is higher. (Colombo, October 7, 2020)
