Sea piling starts on ship lift repair facility at Sri Lanka harbor

ECONOMYNEXT – Walkers Piling (Pvt) Ltd. said it has commenced work on Sri Lanka’s first sea piling project at Mutuwal Harbour to build a ship lift to repair vessels.

The work will be done by a purpose-built barge that allows piling to be carried out at offshore locations, a statement from the company, a subsidiary of MTD Walkers PLC, said.

“Once completed, the Shiplift and Transfer System will allow vessels to be transported from the water to the pier to carry out required repairs,” it said.

Work includes installation and testing of 124 bored, cast in-situ piles, of which 68 piles are located offshore.

Walkers Piling said it drew on knowledge and expertise within the organisation to analyse and formulate new procedures to carry out the required work.

“The traditional boring process had to be modified to account for unstable boulders found on the seabed,” said Douglas Wegiriya, general manager of Walkers Piling (Pvt) Ltd.

Walkers Piling said it currently operates the second-largest fleet in Sri Lanka, consisting of 11 piling rigs.
