In a strongly worded letter written to President Maithripala Sirisena, former president and patron of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga accused him yesterday of arbitrarily forcing the party into an agreement with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
The decision to back the presidential bid of SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa spells certain doom for the SLFP, she wrote, adding that a provision in the “secret agreement” signed between the two parties has confirmed her suspicions that the alliance will prove to be the death of the SLFP.
Bitterly critical of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Kumaratunga lamented the fate of the SLFP under his leadership, accusing him of systematically destroying the party since becoming president and party chairman in 2005.
“You are aware that Rajapaksa has formed and provides leadership to a new party that’s actively working against the SLFP. The party has not even made a statement against him, let alone holding a disciplinary inquiry,” she said.
“I firmly believe, therefore, that my actions have caused no damage to our party,” she added, defending her decision to back rival presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa of the New Democratic Front (NDF).
