Severity of ‘FANI’ reduces, strong winds and showers to continue
Cyclonic storm ‘FANI’ is likely to move north/north-eastwards in the Bay of Bengal, which will gradually reduce its effect on the island, the Department of Meteorology said today (03).
‘FANI’ is currently located about 1,140km northeast of Jaffna.
Strong winds and showers are expected to continue over the island, although the effect of the storm has reduced.
Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western, Uva and Northwestern provinces, and heavy rainfall of about 100150mm can be expected at some places in the aforesaid areas.
According to the Met Department, showers or thundershowers may also occur at several places in the Eastern and North Central provinces, and in the Mannar district.
Strong winds up to 50 km/h can be expected over the island, particularly in the Northern, North Central, Northwestern, Uva, and Southern provinces as well as in the Trincomalee district.
The Met Department urges the public, naval bodies, and fishing communities to pay close attention to any future advisories.
