Shavendra Silva appointed Sri Lanka Army commander

ECONOMYNEXT – Shavendra Silva has been appointed commander of Sri Lanka’s army by President Maithripala Sirisena, after promoting him to the rank of Lieutenant General, the military said.

He succeeds Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

He has been in the army for 34 years.

He enlisted on 5 March 1984 to the Regular Intake 19 of the Army.

He also served as Ambassador and the Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York from 2010-2015. (Colombo/Aug19/2019)
