SLPP faults State media for ‘distorting’ Gota’s statement
The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today (16) accused all state media of distorting and misinterpreting its presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s statements.
Addressing the media at Viyathmaga Office this morning, Gotabaya’s official media spokesman MP Dullas Alahapperuma said that the state media have distorted the statements made by Gotabaya during his first-ever press conference held yesterday (15).
“All the State media whilst following a biased policy, are trying to tarnish the image of our candidate. We say responsibly that Lake House has again started its journey towards the world’s oldest profession. Today, even the headlines of mainstream newspapers are distorted and changed in the Chairman’s rooms. I say this very responsibly,” Alahapperuma said.
“They have excluded some points discussed during yesterday’s press conference and today they have published articles under distorted headlines. On the other side, I watched the news on National Rupawahini the day before yesterday. In a 31-minute story, not even two minutes were allocated for Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Once the Election Commission even appointed special officers to monitor state media. Therefore, we expect that the Elections Commission will immediately look into the state media’s agenda of promoting only one party and shamelessly distorting the truth. We expect to lodge a complaint at the Elections Commission in this regard,”
Asked about Rajapaksa’s statement on the people who surrendered during the last phase of civil war, Alahapperuma assured that Gotabaya gave a clear-cut answer.
“Ms. Siriniwasan’s ( Colombo Correspondent for the Hindu) question was what happened to the people who surrendered to the army when Gotabya was leading the army. Then Gotabaya clearly responds saying that he did not lead the army. Do not get confused. There is a difference between leading the army and giving leadership to the war. Therefore, what you see is distortion,” Alahapperuma added.
