Sri Lanka airport passenger volume slightly up amid closure

ECONOMYNEXT – Passengers volumes at Sri Lanka’s main airport in Katunayaye rose 2.7 percent to 5.4 million in the first 7 months of 2017 despite a daytime closure of the airport for repairs for four months, official data showed.

A Finance Ministry report said 750,000 transit passengers were also handled which was the same as the same period last year.

The airport had handled almost 9 million passengers in 2016, despite being designed for for only 6 million.

Airport and Aviation Services Ltd, the state agency that owns civil airports had earned revenues of 13.05 billion rupees in the first seven months of the year and after tax profits of 3.6 billion rupees, higher than the budgeted 4.3 billion rupees.

There were 34,059 aircraft movements during the period. (Colombo/Dec09/2017)
