Sri Lanka apparel exports hit US$4.8bn in 2017

ECONOMYNEXT – Apparel shipments from Sri Lanka, its main industrial export, hit a high of US$ 4.81 billion in 2017, up 3% from 2016, the Ministry of Industry & Commerce said.
In the month of December 2017 alone apparel exports went up 21% to $452 million, the highest monthly earnings, from the same month in 2016, according to a statement which quoted data by the Joint Apparel Association Forum and Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association.
It said 45% of apparel exports in 2017 (at $ 2.16 billion) went to US while 42% (at $2.02 billion) went to the European Union.
Year on year exports to US were up 2% increase in 2017 while exports to EU went up 4.13%.
