Sri Lanka approves more 1MW solar power plants
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s government has given the go-ahead to four private energy companies to build one megawatt solar power plants in the eastern Trincomalee and southern Moneragala districts.
The state information office said the projects were approved under the government’s ‘Suryabala Sangramaya Program’ to set up solar power plants in several parts of the island.
Suncor Solar City was awarded the contract to build three of seven 1MW solar power plants in Trincomalee with the balance four going to Capital City Holdings, a statement said.
In the Moneragala district, contracts to build four plants went to Golden Corporation Lanka and one to Nihon Green Power Company, a Japanese energy firm.
The contracts were approved by the Cabinet of ministers this week on a proposal Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
