ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s military apprehended 50 kilogrammes of illegal jellyfish that was being transported in a Sri Lanka Transportation Board (SLTB) passenger bus yesterday, an army statement said.
Troops manning roadblocks along the Mannar-Kunchikulam road at 2230 hours had stopped the SLTB bus and upon searching the vehicle had found jellyfish worth over Rs 625,000. A suspect, Mannar resident, was taken into custody along with the consignment of jellyfish, the army said.
The suspect was trying to transport the jellyfish fish from Mannar to Colombo, posing as a conductor of the bus in question, the statement added.
In Sri Lanka, a special permit must be obtained from the Ministry of Fisheries to transport jellyfish.
