Sri Lanka blocks cinnamon imports
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has banned the import and re-export of cinnamon to protect its own product after finding that cinnamon imported from elsewhere had been re-exported, a government spokesman said.
Health minister Rajitha Senaratne said the government was concerned re-export of cinnamon could hurt the image of the island’s own cinnamon which was popular in Latin America and the United States.
The cabinet of ministers this week approved a proposal by Daya Gamage, Minister of Primary Industries, to prohibit the importing cinnamon into Sri Lanka and amend the re-export procedure, he told a news conference.
The Ceylon Cinnamon has been praised in world markets due to its unique taste, colour and smell, Senaratne said.
