Sri Lanka confirms 2,269 Coronavirus cases, Covid-19 deaths 24

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka confirmed 2,269 Coronavirus cases and 24 new deaths were reported in a third wave that is ravaging the country, with authorities imposing controls after doctors warned of a breakdown in the health system.

By the end of the day on May 13, 26,126 Coronavirus patients were under medical care after 1,145 were discharged.

Total deaths had climbed to 868.

Sri Lanka imposed a nightly travel ban from 2300 hours to 0400h the following morning and also restricted the public from travelling out of homes to every other day until May 31 based their identity card numbers.

Inter-district travel was halted except for a limited train and bus services for essential workers.

Sri Lanka has also place around 100 areas under surgical lockdown and is actively tracing and isolating clusters.

Daily confirmation of 2,268 on May 13 is lower than a high of 2,672 reported on May 09, but amid concerns of test delays it is not clear whether it is a firm trend.

Sri Lanka Medical Association, the islands top association of doctors warned earlier in the week that the health system would break down and it was already finding it difficult to take care of non-Covid-19 patients, shortly before controls were tightened. (Colombo/May14/2021)
