Sri Lanka container fire in port said under control
ECONOMYNEXT – A fire onboard a vessel berthed at South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) in Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port that broke out Wednesday morning has been contained.
SAGT said in a statement that the fire started in a container said to contain a shipment of lithium batteries.
“SAGT’s emergency contingency plan was immediately activated with concurrent involvement of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Harbour Master, and port and metropolitan fire brigades,” it said.
“Appropriate evacuation of terminal personnel and action to isolate the fire was initiated,” the statement said.
“The fire has yet to be extinguished, but is being contained to the immediate vicinity of its origins.”
