Sri Lanka Coronavirus deaths go to 12 with foreign returnee
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has recorded it’s the twelfth death from Coronavirus with a foreign returnee from India passing away the state information office said, as the Indian Ocean island has mostly controlled the spread of the disease in the community.
The latest victim was a 47 year old woman who had returned from India on August 20, the head of Sri Lanka’s epidemiological unit Sudath Samaraweera said.
She had been suffering from cancer and had died of heart failure on August 23.
Up to August 21, Sri Lanka had confirmed 2,941 Coronavirus patients involving 1,012 foreign returnees and 36 foreign nationals, the Health Ministry said. On August 22 another six were found.
In the 24 hours ending August 22, 23 cases were confirmed all involving foreign returnees.
Sri Lanka has been aggressively contact tracing infected persons and quarantining them but there had been some testing weaknesses in the early stages.
Sri Lanka is now also doing community testing.
Sri Lanka’s economic activities have been recovering and exports are growing with people able to go back to work unlike Western countries which are using ‘stimulus’.
However Sri Lanka’s credit was downgraded following a fiscal and monetary stimulus bout up to April. (Colombo/Aug23/2020)
