Sri Lanka daily Coronavirus cases in new high of 96 on Kuwait returnees

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has confirmed 96 Coronavirus cases on May 26, the state information office said with 88 returnees from Kuwait driving up the total Covid-19 cases found so far to 1278.

The balance 08 confirmed on May 26, were sailors from an infected Navy base.

One returnee with complications died taking the total up to deaths up to 10.

Up to May 25, 460 persons were in hospital.

Sri Lanka has said it was reviewing repatriation of overseas Sri Lankans after the spite in cases from Kuwait put pressure on the health system.

“Almost all the returnees from Kuwait were detainees at welfare centers or deportation centers in that country,” the President’s office said in a statement.

“It is also a requirement to provide medical treatments to the infected. In this context, it has been decided to revise the repatriation process for Sri Lankans living overseas.

“Flights in June to bring back Sri Lankans home will be planned accordingly.”
