Sri Lanka Easter bombing deaths cut to 253 from 359
ECONOMYNEXT – Deaths from serial suicide bombings of churches and hotels on Easter Sunday by Islamists has been revised down to 253 Sri Lanka’s health ministry said, sharply down from an earlier 359 released by authorities.
The number had been revised down after reconciling data at several hospitals, the statement said.
It had been difficult to give an exact number initially due to body parts arriving at hospitals.
The initial estimate was 290 the health ministry said.
Islamist suicide bombers hit three churches during Easter Sunday mass, when devotees were celebrating the resurrection of Christ and three upmarket hotels frequented by foreigners.
Sri Lanka’s police had received advance warnings that churches were going to be attacked from India but no action has been taken.
Police usually rarely take action when extremists attack Churches in Sri Lanka and usually watch from the sidelines. (Colombo/Apr25/2019)
