ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s exports rose 10.2-pct from a year earlier to 11.36 billion rupees in 2017, with tea exports up 20 percent, seafood up 41.9 percent, while apparel exports were up 3.0 percent, the central bank said.
Imports were up 9.4 percent to 20.98 billion US dollars, the central bank said.
The trade gap expanded to 9.62 billion US dollars from 8.873 billion dollars a year earlier.
The trade gap expanded amid strong capital inflows. The central bank collected 1.6 billion US dollars of reserves from forex markets and invested them abroad, preventing them being turned into imports.
