ECONOMYNEXT – The quality levels of Sri Lankan exporters of food products as well as their packaging have improved significantly, the head of the island’s export promotion body has said.
Specialty food was one of the sectors given priority status at the World Export Development Forum hosted in Colombo this week.
Indira Malwatte, Chairperson and Chief Executive of the Export Development Board, said the event enabled Sri Lankan exporters, especially small businesses, to gain exposure to international buyers.
“I am extremely happy how our food sector has come along,” she told news conference at the end of the forum.
“Food is one sector where SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and the regions can get involved in,” Malwatte said.
“I’m extremely happy with the quality standards in the food sector as well as their packaging.”
She said the WEDF was planned and hosted in a partnership between Sri Lanka’s public and private sectors for the first time, with future initiatives too following the same approach.
