Sri Lanka fuel queue claims first death

ECONOMYNEXT – A person waiting in a queue to buy kerosene (paraffin) in the central Sri Lanka district of Kandy has died after collapsing, police said.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa told EconomyNext the 71-year-old man had joined the already long queue Saturday morning and collapsed sometime in the afternoon. Bystanders had been unable to revive him, he said.

Sri Lanka’s privately owned Sirasa television said the man was believed to be a resident of Wattegama, off Kandy.

The report broadcast comments of a bystander saying the person had collapsed while in the queue and police had called an ambulance and taken the person to hospital.
