Sri Lanka Hambantota port investments as private-public partnerships

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will make a request for proposals for investments in the southern Hambantota port industrial zone with all ventures to be done as private-public partnerships, a government spokesman said.

Health minister Rajitha Senaratne said an initial environmental study done by the University of Moratuwa on proposed industries in Hambantota Port’s Industrial Zone had said coal related activities should not be done there.

“Sri Lanka Ports Authority has already prepared the business plan to identify business ventures that could be undertaken,” he told a news conference.

“It is planned to undertake all ventures as public private partnership.”

The cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal by Arjuna Ranatunge, Minister of Ports and Shipping, to appoint a Cabinet Appointed Negotiating Committee and a Project Committee to prepare and call for proposals and hold talks with investors. (Colombo/January 21, 2016)
