Sri Lanka imposes Coronavirus curfew in Colombo Fort, Borella, Welikada

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has imposed curfew in Fort, Borella and Welikada areas in the capital Colombo with effect from 1800hours on Sunday October 25, the state information office said.

On Saturday authorities imposed curfews in Maligawatte, Keselwatte, BarberStreet, Dam Street and Foreshore Police areas until further notice as well as Gothatuwa and Mulleriyawa.

Essential food outlets and pharmacies in Gampaha district will be opened from 0800hour to 2200 hours for people to buy goods on Monday.

“They will be permitted to walk to the closest store to get supplies,” Sri Lanka’s military chief Shavendra Silva said.

“Also, we are analyzing the numbers in the Gampaha district and we will not hesitate to lift the curfew in areas where we see no risks of the virus.”

“In areas where we have imposed curfew in Colombo District will continue until further notice.”

“And curfew in Beruwala, Payagala and Aluthgama police areas will be lift from 5.00 am tomorrow.”

Sri Lanka confirmed 368 new Coronavirus cases on October 24, taking the Covid-19 total to 7,521 as infections linked to a cluster at a fish-market grew.

On Saturday health authorities had found 13 confirmed persons in Colombo Fort, 77 in Gunasinghapura and 03 in Borella among 368 confirmed, Sri Lanka’s anti-Covid task force said.

Sri Lanka recorded the 15th confirmed death from Coronavirus on Saturday.

Authorities said they were also probing a person who died while waiting to take a Coronavirus test at the Kalpitiya hospital.

The 32 year old who was a resident of Kalpitiya, had worked at a truck which transported fish from Kalpitiya to the fish market in Peliyagoda.

Rikillagaskade hospital was also closed after a doctor who is resident in Kelaniya had been confirmed with Covid-19. He had visited the Peliyagoda fish market.

Fish markets and weekly markets in several town including Trincomallee and Galle have been closed. (Colombo/Oct26/2020)
